The NFG and Cave Conservation
Take nothing but pictures...
Leave nothing but footprints...
Kill nothing but time.
The Niagara Frontier Grotto supports minimum impact caving ethics.

We also support the conservation policy of the National Speleological Society. Please refer to the NSS Cave Conservation Policy.

Cavers who are interested in cave conservation should visit the NSS website and the Cave Conservation and Management Section.  This section provides "a focal point for information about Cave Conservation and Management.

The NSS also has an outstanding and comprehensive Cave Conservation website.

One of the great conservation blunders in Western New York was the closing of Lockport Cave, reported to be nearly two miles in length although the end of the cave never discovered.  The cave was sealed off in the 1880's and the City of Lockport built over the roof of the cave.  The city is still seeing the problems of building over a karst feature as it recently was forced to close a parking ramp due to settling and subterranean collapse.
